What are some symptoms of cardiovascular disease? Yeah, so if you have a significant narrowing in the heart artery then there's a problem with demand and supply so let's say you're going for a jog, your heart muscle is pumping harder, so as we've described the muscle itself needs more blood supply to it, and that blood supply comes via the coronary arteries and so if you have a severe narrowing in the coronary artery, you're not getting enough of a supply when the demand is higher and when you're not getting enough of a supply that causes ischemia which is which translates to angina so you get a failure of appropriate oxygenation of the cells and so you get ischemia we get chest pain or chest tightness and the classic description of angina is exertional chest pain so that's pain that's worse when you're exerting yourself because again the demand is higher so exertional chest pain that's in the center of the chest or to the left side that feels like a tightness across the chest and it can radiate up into the jaw or into the left arm. If it's occasional sharp bits of pain that's short lasting that's not related to exertion that's really non-anginal chest pain or chest pain that's not not related to the heart. Of course there can be other symptoms that you get from coronary artery disease you may start to feel palpitations and things like that, you may start to feel an irregular heartbeat. There can and there usually are other causes for palpitations rather than coronary artery disease, but that is one of the possible causes of palpitations. And then again, palpitation, aside from palpitations, things like feeling dizzy or having racing heartbeats and things like that, all of those things may be signs of angina or indirect signs of angina, as can be breathlessness. And again, breathlessness is one of those relatively nebulous symptoms that you could almost put down to anything. If you're anemic, you can have breathlessness. If you're particularly overweight, that can cause breathlessness. Of course, if you have a chest infection or something else, that can cause breathlessness. But one of the causes of that is coronary artery disease or narrowing in heart arteries. So really, especially in people who have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, someone with breathlessness should certainly be investigated for whether they have cardiovascular participants.
