What are the possible outcomes from a stress echocardiogram?

Dr. Kernighan-Igham, you've found a stress echo, what are the possible outcomes from that? So hopefully, obviously, the test will be negative and it shows that there's no significant narrowings in the heart arteries and that essentially gives you a clean bill of health, tells you that your arteries don't have any serious varying inside them. Of course, you can have a positive stress echocardiogram which essentially means that we have identified there's an area of muscle that's not being fed properly by the blood vessel, by the coronary artery. So if that's the case, we have to then think about correlating that with your symptoms, look at what medical therapy you're on at the moment and take things from there. If you're not on the right medications at that stage, of course we can then start the medications and see how you get on, see what your symptoms are like. If you're already on really good tablets and your symptoms are progressing, at that point you would think about doing something like an angiogram, where you put a needle into the wrist and feed a wire into the heart and actually directly having a look at the arteries to find that significant narrowing and perhaps treat it with a stent.
