Experience with Endovenous ablation

A video demonstrating how Venous Duplex scanning is used to detect venous insufficiency. Properly functioning valve in the veins of the leg allow blood flow in the upward direction only. When valves are faulty, the blood returns back down under the force of gravity.

This is a short animated video explaining what varicose veins are. The two systems of veins in the legs are described and how their join up and provide the drainage channels for blood for the leg circulation. The function of valves are explained and what happens when the valves stop working.

This lady has kindly agreed to share her experience from varicose veins treatment. After diagnosis was established that varicose veins were responsible for her symptoms she underwent venous ablation. Procedure was carried out with ultrasound guidance under locala anaesthesia as a day case.

This is a minimally invasive procedure which aims to block abnormal veins in the leg. A chemical is injected into the veins to damage the lining of the vein being treated. This process causes the vein to block and eventually shrivel away. The procedure is done in an outpatient setting and does not require any anaesthetic (being an injection).
