And after that she will have a one-stop mammogram and ultrasound scan depending on the nature of the lump. On the investigation she will end up having a biopsy or final aspiration cytology. This is called triple assessment where each breast lump will have clinical examination, radiology, mammogram, ultrasound scan and then the sample is sent for histological analysis. Based on the outcome of all these three triple assessments, then a decision will be made almost immediately. Is this cancer? Do we need to take this forward or this is a benign condition in which case we can reassure and discharge the patient often if the examination under mammogram ultrasound scan shows that that this is not suspicious then within a couple of hours the patient will be told the result and then she will be reassured and discharged.
