Open versus keyhole repair for groin hernias

Mr Barkerji, with regards to hernia, would you choose an open repair? What would push you towards an open repair versus a keyhole repair? I think if a patient has bilateral hernias or a recurrent hernia or a patient that is physically very active, I will offer them a laparoscopic repair. The outcome is good. Patients are done as they care under general anaesthesia and in general I encourage my my patient to try and get back to normal within a week to 10 days time. Patients that have unilateral hernia, they are slim or those who want to have a local anesthetic or spinal if they have other comorbidity and GA is contraindicated, then I will offer them an open repair.
