What management is available for Achilles tendon injury?

So Mr Mushtaq, can you please tell us what the treatment options are for Achilles tendon injury? Yeah, sure. So first you have to diagnose the injury and we do that usually clinically. So for example, we're looking at this, this is the back of the Achilles and on this side you can see that there's a normal shape Achilles, whereas here we've lost some of the contour and the natural tension in the back of the calf has gone and so the foot is lying a bit flatter and in this patient you can actually see a little indentation where the Achilles has ruptured and once we assess this clinically we will then organize an ultrasound scan or an MRI scan to confirm the diagnosis and once we've had the diagnosis confirmed by imaging we then plan on treatment. Now there's two ways to treat this we can either treat them without an operation which will involve an air cast boot it's a type of boot that we use or a vacuped boot depending on what you have in your hospital or we can talk about surgery and there's pros and cons of both most cases we tend to treat without an operation but there are certain situations where an operation is more advantageous and these are the cases where there's a large gap in between the two ends of the tendon and so it may not heal naturally or the patient is very sporty and we feel that there is a benefit of surgery because we need to get them back to a very high level of sport and a lower risk of re-rupturing when they're back at sports.
