How long would it take for me to recover from coronary artery bypass grafting? So the most operative recovery from the bypass operation, it generally varies from individual to individual, but most patients would after a safe bypass operation leave the hospital within a week. They require about six weeks to reasonably recover from this operation. By the time they leave the hospital after the operation, they are pretty much self-caring, which essentially means that they can dress themselves up, they can shower, they can even make light breakfast for themselves. Most of them, if they were able to go up and down the stairs prior to the operation, would be able to do that after the operation. And then it takes about six weeks for them to get to a reasonable level of activity, which essentially means that by six weeks, they should be able to walk for about half an hour to 45 minutes without needing any support or help. And they are advised to do lots of deep breathing exercises as well, which helps them to recover quicker after this operation.
