Follow up after pacemaker insertion

Doctor, you were going to tell us about how pacemakers are followed up long term and what patients should expect in terms of the long term. Yes, so as a standard patients always get followed up in the first six weeks and we call the first pacing check at the pacing clinic. So once you have a pacemaker put in, the care is then under the pacing clinic where a team of physiologists who deal with pacemakers as part of the main job will be reviewing you over the many many years in the future. So at six weeks you return to have a pacing check where they will check to make sure the leads are all in the right place and the parameters of what we call we can check the function of the leads to make sure they're all working well and often they will be and following the first six week check then you will be on six months review so patients will come back once every six months or so just to again to make sure the device is working and also to make sure the battery life is still sufficient. At some point often about 10 years after the implant, the patients require to have the battery changed through a sort of much smaller procedure than the first procedure. In some patients, the monitoring becomes remote, so we now have ways where you cannot come into clinic but have the data from the pacemaker transmitted to us wirelessly from the internet, and that's one other option that we do, but this can be discussed and the plan evolved with the pacing team in the pacing clinic.
