Are the recovery times different for an open aortic valve repair and a closed? Yes I think when we do an open operation generally the patient spends around five to six days sometimes even longer in the hospital. They require about six weeks to recover from this operation and there are restrictions on heavy lifting and driving after an open operation. If they are offered trance catheter aortic valve implantation or TAVI, then they spend half the length of time that they would normally spend following an open operation and the return to activity is much quicker. The restrictions are generally for a couple of weeks and then you return to normal activity after that.
