What is aortic valve disease? So aortic valve disease is disease of the aortic valve which is one of the four valves in your heart that connects your heart to the rest of your body. It's designed to ensure that blood goes around the body in the right direction. Over time there is wear and tear of the heart valve leaflets causing a narrowing and therefore an obstruction to blood leaving the heart to the rest of the body. And this puts pressure on the heart making it work harder. With that this can be associated with symptoms of breathlessness, chest pain and dizziness and these are symptoms that we look for in patients with valve disease that we think is physiologically important. The aim therefore of treating aortic stenosis is to one make you feel better if we think that symptoms are attributable to the vowel but also to make you live longer because we're taking the pressure off the heart improving its functionality and reducing the risk of a sudden cardiac catastrophe.
