Absolutely, so chronic kidney disease is classified based on glomerular filtration rate and the level of protein in your urine. Categorizing patients like this helps us to risk stratify them, by which I mean enables us to categorise those patients who are most at risk of their kidney disease progressing to end stage kidney disease where they would require renal replacement therapy which would either be dialysis or a kidney transplant. Very simply there are five stages of chronic kidney disease where stage one is the mildest level of impairment and that goes down to stage five which is where impairment is most severe and that is the stage at which people may need renal replacement therapy.
