Are rotator cuff tears painful?

Are rotator cuff tears painful? Not always. So different scenarios. So if you have an injury following or if you have a rotator cuff tear following an injury that tends to be painful and acutely painful and leads to weakness as well. But if you have a chronic tear and some of these tears develop in the background then they're not always painful. Sometimes you'll be surprised you come across patients where the tear can be there identified on a scan but not necessarily very painful and other times you can have a small tear which is more painful and there are various reasons for that. And what are those reasons? So we think that a tear that has happened over a period of time in the background the body seems to or the shoulder joint seems to adjust to that, but if a tear happens more acutely and it's a small tear where the large part of the tendon and muscle is still active, then that appears to lead counterintuitively to more pain.
