Graduated Compression Stockings/ Hosiery
Introduction
For those who do not wish to undergo surgical treatment, you can use fitted or tailor-made graduated compression hosiery or stocking. The stockings are often worn to just below the knee but can be full length.
It should be borne in mind that these need to be worn daily whenever upright whether it is winter or summer time, in order to be effective. Whilst many patients achieve adequate relief from our compression stockings, other people find even the best fitted stockings uncomfortable or difficult to use.
How it works
The stocking are made using modern textile engineering. They are designed to replace the function of the non-functioning valves, and support the veins but applying external pressure. With the application of this compression, the increased pressure in the veins is eliminated. This controls the symptoms and progression of the venous insufficiency.
The stocking are graduated in their compression. Maximum compression is in the foot, 75% of maximum in the calf and 50% at the knee. This graduated compression prevents blood from being trapped in the foot and causing it to swell. It is important not to allow folds in the stocking to occur when worn as this will prevent the stocking from working as intended and may make leg swelling worse.
Medical use
Stocking are usually ordered according to a grading system to indicate the strength of compression. This is usually labelled from 1 to 4.
Putting them on can be tricky as they are by nature tight, however a couple of devices and techniques may be helpful to overcome problems.
If compression stockings really are too difficult and compression is required, stocking with zip fasteners are available as well as devices which fasten with velcro to avoid having to pull the stockings on.
