Why are fat diets more likely to harm than to help? The reason for that is we have to return to the set point or the weight set point theory. Then one goes on a fat diet that usually involves a significant reduction in the amount of calories you're taking in. How does your body respond to that sudden reduction in calorie intake? Very simple. Your metabolism slows down to compensate for the reduction in calorie intake. What happens then is the physiological compensatory mechanisms kick in. You develop increased levels of hunger, which happens to all of us when we've tried a fat diet. It's very hard to fight the hunger and the urge to eat. Eventually, the diet fails because the hunger sensations are so strong and the drives to eat are so strong. So you go back and resume your old eating habits.
