What is amniocentesis?

Professor Teo, just briefly, could you tell us what is amniocentesis? Amniocentesis, like coronavirus sampling, are procedures where we try to obtain foetal cells from the pregnancy. They are done with very small needles. There are obviously risks to this, about 0.5% to as much as 1%, so one has to balance why you're doing amniocentesis in the first place as to benefits. Nowadays there are other ways of obtaining fetal cells to reassure ourselves whether or not the fetus is normal and what we try and look at now is things like obtaining fetal cells through the maternal circulation so that there's no risk of pregnancy. However I'm obviously an accomplished person in doing endocentes and CDS as I've done it for quite a while but the indications so these procedures are less and less and that's why one should actually be this should be done in specialized centers where we do this all the time.
