What can go wrong if you have a knee replacement?

Hi Mr Imbalder, what can go wrong if you were to have a knee replacement done? That's a great question, so with all surgery there's no guarantee unfortunately that it will be a success, there's always a risk that something untoward will happen. So generally total knee replacement is a fantastic operation but I'd say about one in five patients is less than happy with the result and that's So that's a global figure and we're trying our best to improve that. The main risks, I would say, would be infection, which would require you to have another operation and antibiotics, the fact that you might get a blunt clock or the DVT, you could have injury to a nerve, so you may have some numbness or persistent pain. Sometimes the knee replacement can be quite stiff and bend less than you'd like it. And you may also have risks to do with the anaesthetic techniques. Overall, though it sounds quite scary, risk of one of these serious complications happening is very low, it's about 1% or less. So in general, talk to your orthopaedic consultant about the risks and benefits because they're kind of different for each individual patient.
