Coronary Angioplasty (Mr GD)

Mr GD started experiencing severe chest pain. When the ambulance service arrived they noted abnormalities on his ECG suggestive of a heart attack (ST segment elevation myocardial infarction). Therefore he was brought as an emergency to the cardiac catheterisatiojn lab. On arrival he was reviewed by the interventional cardiology team who though he was having a ongoing heart attack. He had coronary angiogram that revealed a blocked blood vessel supplying the heart that was causing his symptoms. It demonstrated blockage of the left circumflex coronary artery- one of the arteries supplying heart. This was treated with percutaneous (through the blood vessel in the right arm) coronary angioplasty as an emergency. This was performed by relieving the blockage with the use of a coronary angioplasty guide-wire into the blood vessel and then deployment of a drug eluting stent (3mm diameter) to his left circumflex coronary artery. It was also noted in addition to the block blood vessel (treated as an emergency) the patient had severe narrowing in other blood vessels, these were treated at a later date without complication.
