Who treats diabetic foot?

No single doctor, specialist or a specialty can treat the diabetic foot. Diabetic foot is always treated within multi-disciplinary teams. These teams typically comprise here in the United Kingdom of a podiatrist who is an expert in managing wounds in people with diabetes, a diabetes specialist, and a team of surgeons, typically a vascular surgeon and an orthopaedic surgeon. But there are many more people involved in providing multidisciplinary diabetic foot care. This includes plastic surgeons, vascular scientists, radiologists, microbiologists, physiotherapists, most importantly, orthotists, who are responsible for ensuring that the foot is correctly offloaded. There are many, many more people involved with it. So I reiterate, no single person, no single specialist can manage the diabetic foot. it has to be done as a coordinated collaborative effort.
