Ephemeropoptyl bypass or ephemerodistal bypass in vascular surgery is done when you have a blockage in the arteries down your leg. And that blockage in the arteries is preventing blood getting down to the tips of your toes or even to your foot and potentially leading to problems like pain when you walk because the muscles aren't getting enough blood supply or a non-healing long-term chronic wound in your foot or infection in the bones called osteomyelitis. So a bypass is done to take blood from above the blockage to below the blockage and get it down into your foot. That bypass can be done with either a plastic tube or it can be done using materials which are from yourself and typically we use a vein, the long saphenous vein from either the same leg or the other leg.
