What are the risk factors in children for developing Varicose Veins?

The key risk factors to consider in children are one, a family history of varicose veins, but more importantly it should be considered that if it is a child who has been on a special care baby unit or born prematurely, they may have had lines inserted in the groin which will affect the veins in the abdomen which may have blocked and thus causing a dilatation and back pressure to cause varicose veins in the legs. So it is very important that when a child presents with varicose veins that they get a full ultrasound examination not only of the legs but also of the veins in the abdomen.
