The conservative treatment for venous leg ulcers is to offer the patient regular compression, bandaging and hosiery. And in clinical trials, it has been shown that you can get anything up to 80% of these patients to heal within 24 weeks. However, in the community, it is likely that you will only get somewhere around about 50% of these ulcers to heal within 24 weeks, and you will find that there is often a recurrence rate, i.e. further ulceration that will occur with 50% of those with an ulcer that is healed recurring. That is why it is inordinately important that these patients are assessed by a vascular specialist and have the appropriate investigations and treatment.
