How often will I be seen and what tests will I get if I have Gestational Diabetes?

So you will be, once you've been identified, you will be seen every one to two weeks in your what's called a conjoined antenatal clinic. So you will be seen by both the diabetes professional, the diabetes nurse specialist, and also either a specialist midwife or an obstetrician. We're looking at different things so we as diabetes specialists are making sure that your blood sugars are properly controlled and you'll be asked to do blood sugars before you eat in one hour after you eat or two hours after you eat and we will try and get them under the thresholds that we as in the target blood glucose that we need you to do so by dietary change using and using therapies such as metformin or insulin. You will also have growth scans at 28 weeks, 32 weeks and 36 weeks. And this is for the, primarily the obstetrician, but we certainly, I look at how big the baby's abdominal circumference is before making a decision as to whether or not we should say, for example, you're on metformin or you're just on diet alone, that we move you up a stage to perhaps start using insulin or tablets if you're not using tablets and this is to try and impact upon the growth of the baby to make sure it's not getting too big. The obstetrician needs to look at that to figure out how you're going to have your delivery and so that it's done safely.
