Following the initial referral to a vascular specialist, they will do the history and examination portion as well as order the necessary investigations and then there will be a decision on treatment options. Once a treatment option is initiated, that gets periodically reviewed in an outpatient clinic setting to see how that patient is doing with the decided treatment. Once a more definitive option of treatment, such as treatment with either endovenous or open procedure to get rid of the venous reflux, then patients are usually followed up on one occasion to see how they're doing after the surgery and to see if the intervention has resulted in symptomatic improvement, at which point then they don't have to see a vascular specialist unless they experience recurrence of symptoms in the affected leg or new symptoms in another leg that requires further investigation.
