What are the risks of alcohol in surgery? What we find with patients who have drunk alcohol for a long period of time is that their body is quite dependent upon it and the risk of withdrawal after an operation, because obviously you're not able to have a drink after the operation in hospital can be quite significant. There's a risk for yourself of having seizures or being more confused than other people would be and so the most important thing is that you're honest with your clinicians before the operation so that we can support you through the journey during and after.
