How do I know if I'm at risk of cardiovascular disease? So we tend to look at the risk factors of having cardiovascular disease to determine someone's risk. So if you are diabetic or you have a family history of diabetes you are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. The same goes for whether you have high blood pressure, if you've ever smoked or if you have a family history of heart disease such as heart attack or stroke. Being overweight or having a very sedentary lifestyle where you're not getting in much exercise during your week also puts you at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. If you're age 50 or over you may be invited by your GP to go for the NHS health check which involves a discussion about the various risk factors for cardiovascular disease and tests that are available from the NHS to determine your risk. If you have concerns that you're at risk of cardiovascular disease you may wish to discuss these with your GP who can calculate your risk using various tools that we have available to us and discuss these with you. There is also an NHS heart risk check available online by the NHS website where you can check your heart health.
