Coronary bypass and Heart Failure

Heart failure needs to be treated with medicines primarily. And in a proportion of patients, if it's found that they have severe narrowings in their heart arteries, and that's the primary cause of why the heart muscle is weak, it may well be that the best treatment for that is bypass surgery. And that involves bypassing the narrowings in the heart arteries with other vessels in order to improve the blood supply to the heart muscle. Once that blood supply to the muscle is improved, that may well or should help the heart function get better. But of course, not everyone with heart failure has narrowing in the heart arteries. So say you have heart failure because of certain medications that you've taken for other conditions, such as cancer, it may not be the case that bypass surgery is the right thing for you.
