To make healthy choices unless one is mindful, or to put it another way, it's hard to make considered choices. I mean, somebody who is drunk can decide not to have another glass of wine. You don't need to be mindful to make a healthy choice, but I think it helps to be mindful to make a considered choice that is coming out of a deeper part of one. I mean, we are, if we are a refracted kaleidoscope with many lights, we can be acting often from any one of those different mirrors or lenses, as if it is our deepest self, what mindfulness clearly allows us to do is to calm down. So that's why the analogy of a glass of water is helpful. If it's splashing around and you're trying to make a decision while you're on that surface, you might not make such a considered decision.
