So the main thing you have to do is aim to control in pregnancy your blood sugar by controlling the amount of carbohydrate you're having. And so certain diets have very high carbohydrate contents, especially vegetarian diets. So controlling the amount of, say, both simple and complex sugar, so avoiding all sugary drinks, like Coke, Pepsi, these things. Obviously you shouldn't be drinking in pregnancy. It goes without saying you should stop smoking, but this is just in general for pregnancy. But being careful with things like fruit juices, which you might think are healthy, but actually cause your blood sugar to go very high, avoiding large amounts of carbohydrates, and especially those carbohydrates with high, what's called glycemic index. So those things that cause your blood glucose to go up very quickly, such as white bread or white rice. So you should move to sort of brown versions, such as brown rice, brown bread, sweet potato rather than ordinary potatoes, but reducing the amounts of those are very important. And also to, in general, reduce those throughout the whole of your life, because that means that you should lose weight after pregnancy as well.
