Addressing Diabetes Awareness

Community wellness coordinator at LifeBridge Health Sherri Zaslow discusses the challenges faced by individuals dealing with diabetes, focusing on education, awareness, and accessibility to healthcare programs. The speaker highlights the importance of reaching out to those who may feel isolated or lack confidence in seeking help. By improving outreach through social media and direct communication with healthcare professionals, there is hope to better inform patients about available resources. As diabetes continues to be a significant concern in healthcare, addressing these issues is crucial, especially during times when individuals may feel more cut off, like winter. This chapter emphasizes the need for raising awareness and fostering a supportive environment for those managing diabetes.

I think so many of the people that I meet that are dealing with this, you know, they're dealing with their weight creeping up or their sugars aren't great, they don't have the education, I'll call it, the wherewithal to really reach out to their healthcare professionals on recommendations. I know in our healthcare system, diabetes is a huge topic. We just had kind of a small summit on it actually, and we're planning out something to do about this. So I think especially again in the winter, people are more isolated. They just might not know where to reach out. And so we have to go find them where they're at and bring them out to do it. I don't feel, you know, they have the confidence to look for the programs and to be more familiar with what's around. So we need to really put that out there for them so they can see it. And whether it's social media posters or reaching out to their own healthcare professionals so that they know the programs that we're having also.
