Carotid Endarterectomy for acute stoke
This 66 year old gentleman had an emergency Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA) following a stroke. The stroke (or brain attack). The stoke had caused weakness in his left arm and leg and dysarthria (inability to form words). His surgery was performed following transfer from the hyper-acute stroke unit. The surgery was done under local anaesthetic with the patient awake so we could effectively monitor his brain function during the surgery. The CEA is done to remove the narrowing in the carotid artery to the brain from which atheroma breaks off and travels up to lodge in the brain. The intention is to reduce the risk of another stroke from occurring again. This gentleman was reviewed in the clinic 5 months after right CEA, his wound had healed up well and he was symptom free.
