Will I be awake during cataract surgery?

Good evening everyone. So here we are today we are talking about cataracts. Am I awake? Most of the time yes because the standard for the cataract surgery is a local anaesthetic or a topical. Topical anaesthetic means that the eyes will only be numbed by topical anaesthetic drops so there are no injections next to the eye and the recovery is quite fast. The local anaesthetic means that the eyes will be numbed by an injection anaesthetic and essentially it means that the eye eye movement should be paralysed for a few hours and the nerve of the eye is again paralysed for a few hours so the vision takes a while to come back and the eye may be bruised or swollen from the site of the injection itself. Very rarely patients may be too anxious to have it while they awake and very rarely they may prefer to be totally put to sleep which is what we call a general anaesthetic and it depends on the health conditions.
