It can all be massively overwhelming when you are given a diagnosis that will affect so many aspects of your life. Everything becomes a challenge, not only for the person with the diabetes but also for our families and our friends. actually the motivation in the first instance. I have a habit of looking out the window in the morning first thing in the morning when I wake up and you know during winter period you see darkness in the morning and on top of that if the weather's really bad and it's raining or snowing as we've had over the past day or two, then the incentive seems to disappear. The challenges of course are work is at winter time, of course the hospital is very busy, there's lots of infections, the medical side is often prioritised, so it can get quite hectic and busy at work and in the foot clinic where I spend a lot of my time it is often very difficult to bring in people who need that sort of extra care within the hospital through the inpatient service because the hospital's busy looking after more traditional winter illnesses. So So it's a joyous time, but also a very hectic time. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it's freezing cold. I actually like the cold. I come from a cold part of the world, you know, Ireland, and I like the cold, I actually like the cold weather. I love the bracing winds and, you know, a bit of snow doesn't bother me. But some days you just get up and you think, you know what, today I'm just going to work on the computer, get all my admin done and then you eat accordingly to suit that day of sitting at a computer and just going out for half an hour as opposed to going out for an hour and a half, bicycle riding or walking or whatever it may be. Finding goals and motivation is a big part of managing those challenges. The emotional and physical strength in you through family and friends and the diabetic community helps you take ownership of your diabetes journey. At Healthshared, we empower you to understand diabetes with the support of our community.
