Sleeve gastrectomy

Filmed on 13/01/2016 AK, 46-year-old female, suffering from morbid obesity with body mass index (BMI) above 46. She tried many diets and failed to sustain the weight loss for longer period of time. Her medical history covers high blood pressure and diabetes. She was offered laparoscopic (keyhole surgery) sleeve gastrectomy (removal of the part of stomach body), which would give her 25% weight loss. She underwent mandatory psychiatric assessment before the procedure. Her procedure went very well. She lost 20% of total body weight within few months’ following surgery. This allowed her to remain only on oral tablets for her diabetes and insulin could be stopped. Also her blood pressure improved much and her medications were reduced.

After initial assessment was offered laparoscopic (keyhole surgery) gastric bypass for his morbid obesity. He was also a participant in the SCALE study, during which lost some weight. His medical history covers high blood pressure, knee osteoarthritis and pre-diabetic condition. During planned procedure gastric bypass was not amenable and sleeve gastrectomy (removal of the part of stomach body) was performed instead. He recovered well and started losing weight steadily.

Apart from that she did not tolerate band well, was feeling sick and attended few times to Emergency Department. Her medical history includes high blood pressure, depression, ovarian cysts, and removal of the gall bladder laparoscopically (keyhole surgery). She was offered laparoscopic removal of the band and gastric bypass. Before planned procedure underwent psychiatric assessment, which is a part of work up before bariatric procedures. After the procedure she developed chest infection which was treated with antibiotics. Otherwise she recovered reasonably well and started losing weight in a steady fashion.
