How serious is superficial vein thrombosis? Superficial vein thrombosis can be very serious, and this is largely because the superficial vein thrombus can extend or propagate into the deep veins, causing a deep vein thrombosis. Deep vein thrombosis can go on to cause conditions such as post-thrombotic syndrome, which we can discuss elsewhere and that then in turn the clot can dislodge from the deep veins and spread to the body's lung where it affects the ability for the lungs to oxygenate the blood and this is known as a pulmonary embolism.
