Post-thrombotic syndrome is a common and underappreciated complication of deep venous thrombosis. A deep venous thrombosis, or DVT, causes a blockage in the deep vein of your leg which affects blood flow from returning from that leg back to the rest of your body. This is initially managed with anticoagulation or blood thinning medication, which stops the blood clotting as quickly as normal. Sometimes, despite this treatment, a blockage remains. This can lead to the symptoms of PTS.
