What are the risks and benefits of traveling abroad for bariatric surgery? The benefits are that typically some countries offer cheaper surgery than what is available in the United Kingdom. The risks, however, are that patients may not always know which units are safe or have a good record of surgical practice. There's no information about follow-up. And indeed, we've had some horror stories where patients have gone abroad and had what they thought was one operation but ended up having something totally different and were not aware of it. And other patients have unfortunately died because of complications from having had bariatric surgery abroad.
