Health concerns for a person with Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and Diabetes.

Dr Mushtaqur Rahman, Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist explains the benefits of stopping smoking for people with Diabetes. He talks about it being a risk factor for Peripheral neuropathy (damage to the nerves to the feet) as well as for Peripheral Vascular Disease (narrowing of arteries supplies the feet) and Coronary Artery disease (narrowing of arteries to the heart).

Dr Sunthar Kanaganayagam, Consultant Cardiologist at Imperial College London, talks about Diabetes being a risk factor for Coronary Artery Disease (narrowing of the heart arteries). He explains that guidelines suggest that Cholesterol levels should be reduced far more than people without Diabetes. Sunthar also explains that the likelihood of having Coronary Artery Disease is much higher than normal if you have Diabetes with some degree of damage to organs like eyes or kidneys. He goes on to explain a very big study which reports that Statins have a very significant role in reducing the risk of death from cardiovascular causes.

Sister Parminder Rihal, Diabetes Specialist Nurse explains why blood sugar control control is so important. She explains that damage is being done to arteries and nerves and other tissues in your organs without you knowing. She talks about possible silent heart attacks, strokes, damage to the nerves of your feet and damage to the kidneys.
